Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical tale of Joseph, his father Jacob, his eleven brothers, and the famous coat of many colors.
Presented entirely through song and led by the Narrator, the musical follows Joseph, the favored son. After his brothers sell him into slavery, he gains the trust of the Egyptian noble Potiphar but is imprisoned when he refuses the advances of Potiphar’s wife. While confined, Joseph discovers an ability to interpret dreams and is later brought before a mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s plan to save Egypt from famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and ultimately reunites him with his family.
The score is full of catchy numbers in a variety of styles, including:
- "Those Canaan Days" — a parody of French ballads
- "One More Angel in Heaven" — country-western
- "Benjamin Calypso" — calypso
- the classics "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door"
